The sophisticated charm of 1950s Cuba has been recreated with an inspiring interior fit out of a double story heritage listed building on Sydney’s York Street. The 650sqm bar and restaurant has been transformed through an innovative and highly researched interior design process. Timber panelled ceilings, antique ceiling fans and unique rum barrel displays are just some of the design elements that show the strength and determination of the Design Clarity team to ensure that the finished product is spot on with the original vision for the space.

The world famous La Bodeguita Del Medio asked Design Clarity to help bring the creative Cuban styled bar/restaurant to Sydney’s York Street. Since opening in Cuba in the 1950s the concept has developed into a global icon with sites in Prague, Macedonia, Miami, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Beirut and Mexico. With this string of highly successful bar/restaurants operating around the world, La Bodeguita Del Medio wanted Sydney to have the opportunity to relive the heydays of Cuba. A heritage listed double story building on York Street was finally chosen to house the exciting concept and with the help of the Design Clarity team it has emerged as an innovative and inspiring space.

For over two years, the Design Clarity team worked closely with the owners and managers of the site to create a sophisticated, cosmopolitan atmosphere in-line with old-world Cuban traditions. After long hours of creative deliberation and consideration of innovative new design processes, the team produced an inspiring set of concept drawings. Researching the traditions and feel of Cuba in the 1950s, the team came up with distinctive design elements that are incorporated into the space. Rum barrel displays with raw brickwork, timber ceilings and suspended antique ceiling fans, personalised rum lockers, an external luxury cigar lounge and an incredibly grand entrance hall all bring out the original style of La Bodeguita Del Medio.

The basement level is a more intimate space; there is a live music stage and furniture that features rich, dark-stained traditional timber with studded leather upholstery and has a solid, aged quality. The lighting throughout is moody and the walls are adorned with hand scrawled thoughts of patrons, plus some fabulous hand painted murals. An old Ernest Hemingway overlooks the scene at the maitre d’ station beside his famous quote, “My mojito in La Bodeguita”.

The managers wanted to make an impact on the Sydney market and the integration of old-world Cuban style with Sydney’s laid back yet sophisticated bar culture is a perfect fit. Design Clarity was given the freedom of expressing the Cuban culture and throughout the design process excitement filled the office. The team are passionate about transforming commercial interiors with their creative attitude and innovative design practices; always aiming for excellence.

Have a look at how the style and charm of Cuba in the 1950s has been captured at 125 York Street, Sydney. While you’re there see if you can find the Design Clarity logo alongside a hand scrawled red 1950s Cadillac sketch.
