When a Heritage Library Building Turns into a Bar

DC has worked with Browns, a premium brand under the Mitchell & Butlers group, to create a new interior design concept now being implemented across the UK. Browns Bristol is an ideal location to showcase the design, set in the unique surrounds of what was the Bristol Library and Philosophical Institution. The DC team implemented a beautifully elegant and whimsical aesthetic, taking care to maintain the listed building’s original architectural features.

A range of dining configurations has been created throughout the generous site, with clever zoning and levels to break up the space. Particular attention was given to the dazzling bar area, creating a central focus to draw in the local university crowds.

DC was the finalist for ‘The Best Restaurant or Bar in a heritage building‘ by Restaurant & Bar Design Awards.

The main dining hall embraces the building's stunning Venetian Gothic architecture to create a truly dramatic hospitality setting. By placing contemporary luxury furniture beneath grand historic stone arches and soaring ceilings, the design teams craft a unique contrast. This layout honors the landmark property's academic history while infusing a lively, modern social energy.

The layout utilizes the dramatic window perimeter to arrange a series of intimate, flexible tables for two. By pulling tables close to the expansive lancet glass, the plan offers diners an immediate connection to the outdoor streetscape while keeping them immersed in the internal heritage atmosphere. This alignment ensures a high-value, visually stimulating seat for every guest.

The main cocktail bar functions as a high-octane visual anchor, deliberately designed to pull arriving guests deep into the grand hospitality interior. By inserting a gleaming, modern metal and glass structure into the historic architectural frame, the design establishes a luxurious focal point. This dynamic feature sets an energetic, celebratory tone for the entire brasserie experience.

A wide spatial perspective showcases how the open floor plan weaves high-capacity dining tables into a smooth, easy-to-navigate layout. By placing large, soft seating hubs across the room, the design team breaks up the expansive floor into cozy, welcoming zones. This clever setup guides guests naturally from the front door directly to the energetic bar area.

The layout uses smart changes in floor level and custom partition walls to carve out a cozy, private lounge pocket within the grand venue. This clever setup separates casual drinks areas from busy walking paths without blocking the view of the beautiful building architecture. The design offers guests a comfortable, secluded corner while keeping them connected to the lively room.
