Harris Farm Markets | Australia

Style Guide & Schematic Concepts

Established in 1971, Harris Farm Markets is one of Australia’s largest independent grocers, with 1,000 employees who are committed to the 11,000,000 customers who visit every year.

2015 marked a dramatic re-thinking of the retail concept and identity of Harris Farm stores, which now include several locally-famous foodie concessions – featuring a butchery, café, seafood bar, cheese rooms, pizzeria and more.

Design Clarity was engaged to assist with the rationalisation of their retail design approach, starting with the development of a comprehensive Style Guide. The design principles for each of the zones were defined, each with a distinct tone of voice, along with an initiative to ensure each site has a strong local connection and identity. This streamlining, evolving, and documenting of generic components was created to enable time and cost-effective management of future stores.

Our work extended to DA submissions for new sites, and initial schematic studies for exploring potential formats on future sites. Darby Street Newcastle early sketch models were generated to demonstrate options for connecting two existing buildings across the site.
