Design Clarity was contracted by QIC to act as external retail design managers for their latest Robina Town Centre development on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.

Design Clarity’s RDM role for QIC involved reviewing all food retail tenancies across the various mall zones at Robina – including kiosks, key café sites, the fresh food precinct and the food court.

When the centre’s second stage opened in early April 2009, Design Clarity had a staff allocation of two full-time designers on site each week during the final construction phase to handle design review meetings, site tours, on-site installation and contractor queries, defects and final meetings.

“Just a quick note to personally thank you and your team for the effort put in at Robina. We are collectively very proud of the overall result which has been well received in the market. Thanks again.”

The main dining volume is visually anchored by a series of custom, organic-shaped metallic reflectors suspended overhead. This high-level design feature softens the expansive vertical scale of the food court, working alongside natural timber soffits to diffuse daylight from central skylights while establishing a distinct identity for the precinct.

The food court layout relies on distinct furniture groupings and column grids to break down a large communal volume into manageable, comfortable seating pockets. An escalator line connects multi-level retail pathways to this central dining hub, while a continuous glazed upper gallery keeps vertical views open throughout the precinct.
