Buttercup Cake Shop

White bevelled metro tiles, herringbone pattern wall, oak peg rail, bespoke timber utensils, pink baking silhouettes, commercial bakery wall finish, retail food theatre joinery.

Over-sized shaker-style kitchen with tea-pot lighting draws in huge crowds at Westfield Stratford

Buttercup Cake Shop sits at the entrance to the ‘Great Eastern Market,’ within Westfield’s newly opened UK shopping mall at Stratford.
Designed as an oversized Shaker kitchen, the space features embellished elements of the traditional handbuilt kitchen, drawing inspiration from honest, utilitarian, British joinery. These core elements are intended to reflect the brand’s ethos; using the finest and freshest ingredients to create hand-make cupcakes with no assembly lines.
Juxtaposed with this honesty, are playful design elements such as the giant teapot drum lighting feature, and the impossibly high chest of drawers, with all the toppings and ingredients safely stored within, to create some drama and intrigue inquiring minds
Topping the technicolour cupcakes becomes a form of ‘food theatre’ on the ‘icing stage’ behind the main counter, and the main display offers the customer a plethora of mouthwatering flavours to choose from.
Setting the pace for the transformation of East London, Westfield Stratford City continues to draw the crowds, and many foodies will be impressed with the artisan foods on offer. Design Clarity has been involved in numerous projects for the centre, which is now Europe’s largest.

A layered material palette focuses customer attention on the illuminated display case while framing the artisanal preparation areas behind.

The open-fronted layout uses natural timber textures and direct sightlines to invite mall visitors into a high-scaled culinary experience.

Shallow timber ledges and integrated timber frames turn the perimeter walls into an engaging, content-driven brand archive.
